Thomas Carney (1797 – 1887)
Relationship: 4 x great grandfather
Born: About 1797 (he was 90 on his death certificate)
Married: 27 January 1820 in Elphin parish, Roscommon to Marie Feeny
Died: 1887 in Strokestown, Roscommon
Parents:
Spouse: Marie (Maria) Feeny
Children: Bridget (1820); John (1824); possibly Thomas (see below)
Thomas’s death listing in 1887 shows he was 90 years old, so would have been born around 1797. There are several baptisms in Ireland (though none near Roscommon) for Thomas Carney, but as his marriage record doesn’t show his father’s name there’s no way to narrow them down.
Thomas’s children were born in Cloonmahan. In 1857, Griffith’s Valuation shows that Thomas Carney leased land and house in Cloonmahan, Strokestown, Rosscommon from Arthur Joseph French. The land cost £6 a year, the house cost 15s a year. It was 110 acres shared with 10 other families (John King, Bryan Murray, Luke McNeil, Michael Flynn, Owen Carney, Owen Carney Jnr, Jeremiah Conreen, Patrick Moran, Peter Kelly and Thomas Carney Jnr).
Note: although it’s possible that Thomas Carney jnr is Thomas’s son, I can’t find a baptism for him.
